Specific Medical Concerns with Disability Insurance
Are there specific medical situations that insurance companies look at extremely carefully?
Truthfully, Disability insurance companies will look at every detail in an applicants medical history and medical records. Understandably, insurance companies want to sell policies, but do not want to sell policies that have a greater risk of claims. If a persons medical history indicates an increased risk for a future disability claim, the insurance company will most likely exclude the specific condition or decline the application.
Dread diseases such as: Cancer, Heart disease, Diabetes, etc. are problematic and applicants with these issues will often be declined. Two conditions that may also post issues during underwriting are Mental/Nervous conditions and Musculoskeletal conditions. These two conditions alone make up about 1/3 of all LongTerm disability claims. In many cases, if either of these conditions is mentioned in a persons medical history or medical records, an insurance company will exclude them and potentially even apply additional limitations to the policy.
